Forest Green Rovers have relieved former Watford striker Troy Deeney of his managerial duties after a string of six winless games under his leadership. The decision comes just days after Deeney publicly criticized his team following a 2-0 defeat by Harrogate.
Deeney, who held the managerial position for 29 days in his debut role, accused his players of “hiding” and “being scared” after the home loss, stating that the team was “full of sulkers.” The 35-year-old, appointed as Forest Green Rovers manager on December 20, had recorded three draws and three defeats in his six matches in charge, leaving the club at the bottom of League Two.
Reflecting on his comments, Deeney later admitted that he should not have been so harsh on his players and acknowledged that his emotions got the best of him. Deeney, who initially joined Forest Green in a player-coach role last summer, took over from the sacked David Horseman.
Forest Green Rovers chairman, Dale Vince, expressed regret over the decision, stating on the club’s website, “These are decisions nobody likes to make, but we have acted this way to give FGR the best possible chance of improving results and climbing the league table. We wish Troy all the best for the future and thank him for his efforts.”
Goalkeeping coach Dan Connor will step in as the interim manager for the upcoming game against Gillingham. Despite Deeney’s efforts, he was unable to turn the team’s fortunes around, recording three losses and three draws during his brief tenure.
