A tragic incident unfolded in Ecuador as Diana Carnero, a councillor, fell victim to a fatal shooting shortly after presiding over a crucial meeting on Wednesday.

Diana Carnero, aged 29, became the target of the attack while documenting the dilapidated road conditions in Naranjal, located in Guayas province. In a chilling turn of events, she was shot in the head by two men riding on a motorcycle. The police reported that the perpetrators swiftly fled the scene following the assault.

Despite immediate efforts to save her life, Carnero succumbed to her injuries upon arrival at a nearby hospital, leaving behind a community in mourning.

As investigations unfold, authorities have yet to make any arrests in connection with the case, intensifying the urgency to apprehend those responsible for the heinous act.

The news of Carnero’s untimely demise has sent shockwaves across the nation, prompting widespread condemnation and calls for justice. Former President Rafael Correa expressed his sorrow, lamenting the loss of a promising figure dedicated to the welfare of Naranjal and the country at large.

Guayaquil’s deputy mayor, Blanca Lopez, echoed the sentiments, emphasizing the urgent need to address the escalating violence that threatens the safety and security of citizens.

Tragically, Carnero’s death adds to a distressing trend of political violence in the region. President Daniel Noboa recently declared a state of emergency in response to a surge in violent incidents attributed to organized crime syndicates. The ominous warning issued by these criminal elements, threatening lethal consequences for individuals outdoors past curfew, underscores the gravity of the situation facing Ecuador.
