Police have seized more than 1,112 metric tonnes of contaminated sugar in Mombasa worth Ksh.214 million that was about to be released to the public.
The contaminated sugar was discovered at a private container freight station, CFS Mitchell Cotts, and was allegedly imported by an individual identified as Rehema Badi, an employee of Elevon Logistics Limited.
The sugar, contained within 46 containers, had purportedly been imported late last year, according to documents seized by the Kenya Ports Authority and Kenya Revenue Authority.
The importer, upon the discovery of the contaminated goods, received compensation from the shipper’s insurer. It was agreed that the sugar would be destroyed upon the vessel’s arrival at the Port of Mombasa.
