The Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) has unveiled a list of five suspects wanted in connection with the Embakasi explosion, which resulted in six fatalities, over 270 injuries, and the displacement of hundreds.
In a statement dated Tuesday, February 6, the DCI highlighted that the mentioned individuals have not cooperated for questioning despite their apparent links to the case.
The wanted suspects include Stephen Kilonzo, the site manager, and Ann Kabiri Mirungi, Lynette Cheruyoit, officials from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA). Additionally, two drivers, Robert Gitau and Abraham Mwangi, suspected of transporting the lorry to the accident scene, are on the DCI’s list of wanted individuals.
“Five other suspects are still at large and are wanted by the DCI to answer for their crimes that have caused untold physical and emotional suffering to fellow Kenyans,” noted the DCI.
However, the DCI achieved a breakthrough in the case with the arrest of the main suspect, Derrick Kimathi, believed to have rented the premises in Embakasi.
Furthermore, the DCI apprehended three NEMA officials who allegedly authorized the operation of the LPG plant within a residential area. The arrested officials are David Ongare (Director of Environment Compliance), Joseph Makau (Head of Environmental Impact Assessment), and Mirrian Kioko.
“The DCI continues to extend condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wishes for the quick recovery of those recuperating in various health facilities,” stated the DCI.
These arrests followed direct orders from President William Ruto, who condemned the incident and urged prompt action.
