Residents of Mradi area, in Embakasi raised concerns early morning on Monday, February 05, about a possible gas leakage at the site where a tragic gas explosion occurred on Thursday, February 1, 2024.
As of today, the death toll had risen to 6 dead, and 7 in critical condition. Dozens others are still admitted in hospital receiving treatment.
According to Embakasi Police Commander Wesley Kimetto, the panic reports from the public prompted an investigation into the suspected gas leakage.
Kimetto stated that his preliminary assessment at the location did not conclusively confirm the presence of a gas leakage.
In response to the situation, the police have however reached out to officials from the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), who are en route to the scene to verify whether there is an underground tank and to assess if it is leaking.
Videos posted on social media platform X, showed concerns citizen pacing up and about, clearly distressed with memories of the tragic explosion still fresh in their minds. Schools in the area have also been shut down with children evacuated.
As a precautionary measure, the police have also advised residents residing near the site to evacuate their houses.
Nairobi Police Commander Adamson Bungei is among the officers present at the location, actively assessing the situation. Further updates will be provided pending the confirmation and assessment by EPRA officials.
