A man is currently in police custody at the Matuu Police Station in Machakos County following allegations that he deliberately set his house on fire while he and his wife were still inside.
According to reports, the man locked the house from the inside using a padlock and concealed the keys in his pocket. He then proceeded to ignite a gas cooker and subsequently set fire to a mattress within the home.
As flames engulfed the residence with the couple trapped inside, the wife managed to raise an alarm. Prompt response from neighbors led to the swift intervention of breaking into the house through a window, rescuing both individuals.
Unfortunately, despite the rescue effort, the couple’s home was reduced to ashes in the blaze, as confirmed by area village elder Peter Mutungi.
Matuu Police Station OCS, Peter Mugambi, verified that the man is presently undergoing questioning regarding the incident. The motive behind the alleged arson attack remains under investigation.
