In a scene reminiscent of a horror movie, Goutam Guchhait, a 40-year-old man from Bengal’s Purba Medinipur district, India, shocked residents when he was spotted at a bus station brandishing a sickle in one hand and his wife’s severed head in the other.
Guchhait’s body and clothes were also smeared with blood.
Ignoring the shock and terror of the gathered crowd, he made vague and threatening remarks, periodically raising the severed head as if to accentuate his macabre display.
The shocking incident occurred on a day when Valentine’s Day coincided with Saraswati Puja, a festival celebrated with joy and reverence across the region.
According to police reports, Goutam Guchhait confessed to beheading his wife due to unresolved family-related issues. After committing the heinous act, he proceeded to the nearby bus stop, where he paraded with the severed head, drawing further shock and fear from the bystanders. The gruesome scene was captured by locals on their mobile phones, immortalizing the horrifying event.
It was not until over an hour later that law enforcement authorities arrived at the scene. By then, Goutam had been apprehended, and the lifeless body of his wife, identified as Fulrani Guchhait, was discovered.
Goutam was promptly taken into custody, while Fulrani’s body was sent for post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact circumstances of her death.
Witnesses reported that Goutam’s parents were also brought to the police station for questioning. They had earlier claimed that their son suffered from mental instability, shedding light on a possible motive behind the gruesome act that had left the community in shock and mourning.
