Nairobi Senator and Linda Mwananchi leader Edwin Sifuna has dismissed allegations that former President Uhuru Kenyatta is financing opposition leaders seeking to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
Sifuna appeared to mock Ruto after sharing a snippet from an interview in which the President was asked to provide evidence that Uhuru was bankrolling the opposition.
“Yule jamaa amebeba akili yote ya Kenya aliulizwa swali mboga sana, atoe evidence Uhuru ndio sponsor ya upinzani akasema hata yeye alisoma kwa gazeti…na anadai sisi ndio mafala,” Sifuna said.
Sifuna Questions Evidence Behind Uhuru Claims
Ruto and his allies have on several occasions accused Uhuru of supporting and financing opposition figures, including Sifuna and former Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, as political activity intensifies ahead of the 2027 elections.
The claims have also linked Uhuru to efforts to assemble a broad opposition alliance capable of challenging the Kenya Kwanza administration.
However, when Ruto was pressed during the interview to provide evidence that Uhuru was funding the opposition, the President reportedly referred the journalist to an earlier article published by the same newspaper.
The article had reported that Uhuru convened a political alliance aimed at challenging Kenya Kwanza in the next General Election.
Uhuru Yet to Respond
Uhuru has yet to publicly respond to the allegations that he is financing the opposition.
Sifuna’s latest remarks come as political realignments continue to gather pace ahead of the 2027 General Election, with leaders across the political divide positioning themselves for what is expected to be a closely contested presidential race.
