Members of the National Assembly are calling for a forensic audit of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) payroll system following revelations of rising expenditure due to salary overpayments.
The demand for an audit gained traction after the House Public Accounts Committee (PAC) interrogated TSC CEO Nancy Macharia over a flagged sum of Sh466 million in the Financial Year 2021/2022.
Macharia attributed the overpayments to inefficiencies in the manual reporting system, citing delays in stopping salaries of deceased, absent, or resigned employees.
In the previous fiscal year, TSC reported a total expenditure of Sh352 million on salaries, with Sh114 million resulting from overpayments.
Auditor General Nancy Gathungu criticized TSC for its failure to demonstrate efforts in recovering the overpaid salaries, raising suspicions of mismanagement.
MPs expressed concerns over the repeated failure of TSC to address overpayments, raising questions about possible collusion within the commission to siphon public funds.
Several legislators emphasized the need for a thorough review of the TSC payroll system to identify and rectify systemic challenges leading to financial losses.
