A 22-year-old man from Chekata, Kakamega County was shot dead after he launched a violent attack on his 68-year-old mother, prompting police intervention.
According to authorities, the man, identified as Ian Wanjala, had armed himself with a machete, a knife, and a hoe, threatening his mother’s life. His elder brother urgently reported the threatening situation to the Navakholo Police Station.
Upon receiving the distress call, the Officer Commanding the Station (OCS) swiftly dispatched a team of officers to the scene where they found the situation had escalated from threats to Wanjala now chasing his mother with the menacing weapons.
Accordint to witness reports, it was revealed that officers attempted to de-escalate the situation and calm the agitated suspect. However, Wanjala turned hostile towards the OCS, aiming to strike him with the hoe.
In a desperate attempt to defend himself, the OCS evaded the imminent blow, but not without sustaining injuries. The reports further disclosed that the OCS suffered two broken fingers and scratches as he fell to the ground while trying to evade the attack
“The OCS evaded the aim, blocking with his right hand there by sustaining two broken fingers and unfortunately fell to the ground while attempting to escape. The suspect cornered him and again aimed with the jembe but before striking the OCS fired a warning round in the air,” police said.
In a tragic turn of events, the OCS, fearing for his life, was forced to take decisive action. He discharged his firearm, striking Wanjala in the chest.
Following the altercation, both Wanjala and the injured OCS were promptly rushed to Navakholo Sub-County Hospital for urgent medical attention. Tragically, Wanjala was pronounced dead upon arrival at the medical facility.
Meanwhile, the OCS received initial medical treatment at the hospital before being transferred to Kakamega County General Referral Hospital for further care. The deceased’s body was transported to the hospital’s mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem examination to ascertain the cause of death.
