Abdi Bare Duale, the brother of Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, has been appointed as the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Kenya Railways Corporation, according to a Gazette Notice issued on Friday, February 09.
Abdi’s appointment is effective from February 9, 2024, and he will serve for a three-year term.
The notice was issued by the Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport, Kipchumba Murkomen.
In the notice, Murkomen cites the powers conferred by section 4(a) of the Kenya Railway Corporation Act for effecting Abdi’s appointment.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 4(a) of the Kenya Railway Corporation Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport appoints Abdi Bare Duale to be the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Kenya Railways Corporation, for three (3) years, with effect from February 9, 2024,” the notice stated.
Additionally, President William Ruto revoked Abdi’s appointment as the Chairperson of the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (Ketraco) board, just a year after he had received the appointment.
Abdi has held various leadership roles on boards during both the tenures of President Ruto and retired President Uhuru Kenyatta. In June 2017, he was selected by former Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich to join the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) board for a three-year term. However, his tenure was cut short when President Uhuru revoked his appointment a year later.
Following this, Abdi was reassigned to chair the Kenya Leather Development Council board. He has previously served as a board member of the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) as well.
