The ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party has made a significant announcement, formally throwing its support behind opposition leader Raila Odinga’s candidacy for the African Union Commission Chairperson position.
In a press address delivered by UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malala on Saturday, the party expressed admiration for Odinga, describing him as a “true Pan-Africanist.”
Malala emphasized that the decision to support Odinga’s bid was not merely political but rather a patriotic one aimed at enhancing Kenya’s standing and reputation on the continental stage. He commended Odinga’s contributions to Africa, citing his role in condemning dictatorship and promoting democracy across the continent.
“Raila has proved himself as a true Pan-Africanist. When Africa was going through dictatorship, Raila was there to condemn it…he adds up to Africa’s great sons, and played a big role in African democracy,” remarked Malala.
He urged UDA party supporters to rally behind Odinga, underscoring the importance of national unity in supporting a fellow Kenyan’s candidacy for such a prestigious position.
Addressing rumors of former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s interest in the AU Chairperson position, Malala likened it to a showdown between sprinter Ferdinand Omanyala and long-distance runner Eliud Kipchoge, suggesting that Odinga’s candidacy was already established.
The endorsement by the ruling party adds weight to Odinga’s bid, following similar support from his own Azimio coalition. With confidence and optimism surrounding Odinga’s candidacy, both domestically and internationally, the stage is set for a potentially historic appointment.
