Police in Taita Taveta have arrested a 34-year-old woman accused of assaulting her six-year-old relative. The suspect, identified as Zawadi Mlewa, allegedly assaulted her cousin, Alex John Mencha, on Friday, March 29.

According to a police report, the incident occurred around 7:00 a.m., when Zawadi Mlewa reportedly burnt the boy’s private parts using burning papers as punishment for wetting his bed. The six-year-old sustained burns on the base of his penis.

The victim, who was under the care of his aunt Bahati John and cousin while his mother, Linah John, works in Saudi Arabia, was later taken by Zawadi to Tarasaa Catholic Dispensary for treatment. After receiving initial treatment, he was discharged, but subsequently referred to Ngao sub-County Hospital for further examination, where a P3 form was obtained.

The case was reported to Tarasaa Police Station, leading to the apprehension of the suspect, Zawadi Mlewa. She will remain in police custody until the next Tuesday when she is scheduled to be arraigned in court.
