Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen has announced that all Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) and heavy commercial drivers will undergo retesting, as required by law.
Initially scheduled for earlier implementation, the directive was postponed following objections from stakeholders in the sector. However, Murkomen emphasized that the directive will now be executed without delay, with all parties expected to comply and cooperate.
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) will oversee the implementation of medical testing for all drivers, in accordance with section 105A(1) and (2) and Rule 30(4) of the Traffic (Driving Schools, Driving Instructors, and Driving License) Rules 202. This measure aims to ensure that only medically fit drivers are licensed to operate vehicles.
Additionally, CS Murkomen highlighted that the National Police Service and NTSA will intensify nationwide enforcement efforts. Police will impound unroadworthy vehicles and those lacking integration with the road safety management system for transmitting speed limiter data.
NTSA had previously announced on June 20, 2023, that periodic retesting would be mandatory for drivers of PSVs, school buses, matatus, and taxis. These re-tests, to be conducted every three years, require drivers to apply online through their e-citizen accounts for a fee of Sh 1,050.
