Police in Bomet have arrested two suspects believed to have participated in heckling during President William Ruto’s visit to the county on Saturday.
The arrests follow Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki’s directive to crack down on organizers and financiers of the disturbances witnessed in both Bomet and Kericho counties.
According to Bomet County Commissioner Ahmed Omar, police and authorities are also actively pursuing additional individuals, including politicians, in connection with the incidents. He mentioned that by the end of Tuesday, more suspects would likely be in custody as investigations continue.
“We are hunting down for five to six others,” Omar added.
Kindiki, during his tour to Kericho on Monday, urged police to swiftly conclude investigations and arrest all individuals involved in organizing, financing, and orchestrating hooliganism, regardless of their political or social status.
The disturbances occurred during the launch of the tarmacking of Kyogong-Kapkesosio-Sigor-Longisa road at Kapkesosio center in Chepalungu on Saturday, where President Ruto was compelled to intervene multiple times after some youth heckled Governor Hillary Barchok.
Expressing his displeasure, Ruto emphasized the importance of orderliness in his meetings.
“I do not want this kind of chaos in my meetings. United Democratic Alliance (UDA) is a party that embraces order. Allow the leaders to make their speeches and if they have not performed, wait and deal with them in the next general election by voting them out,” said a visibly angry Ruto.
