Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has pledged to assist tea farmers in safeguarding themselves against the influx of “twilight girls” who descend upon tea-growing regions when annual bonuses are distributed.
These girls, commonly known for their presence in local hotels during October when tea bonuses are disbursed, engage in schemes to deceive and defraud men of their money.
“Shopping centers are often inundated with these call girls in the weeks leading up to the announcement of bonuses, as they strategize to lure predominantly elderly men,” stated Gachagua.
Reports have emerged of men being drugged in bars, resulting in significant financial losses, in various parts of the county in previous years.
Last year, tea farmers received bonuses totaling Sh44.15 billion, marking the highest payment ever recorded. Gachagua remains optimistic that this year’s payment will surpass that figure. He emphasized the importance of proactive measures to protect the farmers’ interests during this vulnerable period.
