Rashid Echesa, chairman of the Kenya Water Towers Agency is expected to appear in court on Monday, March 4, following the High Court’s reversal of his acquittal.
Echesa, served as Cabinet Secretary for Sports and Heritage for one year before he was fired by former President Uhuru Kenyatta in March 2019.
In December 2021, the former Cabinet Secretary for Sports was cleared of charges related to a Sh39 billion fake arms deal.
At that time, Senior Principal Magistrate Kenneth Cheruiyot ruled that the prosecution had failed to prove its case due to the absence of a key witness.
However, the prosecution contested the acquittal, leading to a review by Milimani High Court Judge Kanyi Kimondo. Judge Kimondo determined that the trial magistrate made an error by acquitting Echesa based on the lack of testimony from certain witnesses.
As a result, Echesa has been directed to appear before a Chief Magistrate’s Court to discuss further proceedings regarding his defense hearing in the arms deal case.
