Joseph Irungu, also known as ‘Jowie’, is set to learn his fate on Friday, March 8, regarding the murder of Kenyan businesswoman Monica Kimani.
The verdict follows his conviction for the murder, as ruled by Lady Justice Grace Nzioka on February 9, effectively concluding a murder trial that commenced around 2018.
The Nairobi court’s decision came after it determined that the prosecution had presented sufficient evidence, establishing beyond reasonable doubt that Jowie was responsible for Monica’s death.
Although former TV news anchor Jacque Maribe, who was co-accused with Irungu, was acquitted of the murder charge, the judge noted that the prosecution had not pursued the appropriate charge against her.
In her ruling, Justice Grace Nzioka stated, “Having considered the evidence in this matter, it is the finding of this court that the prosecution has adduced adequate evidence and has met the threshold… It is the finding of this court that the first accused person murdered the deceased.”
Monica’s body was discovered at her residence in Lamuria Gardens Apartment on Kitale Lane, off Denis Pritt Road in Kilimani, in 2018. Irungu, alias Jowie, was apprehended and subsequently charged with the murder, alongside his then-girlfriend, TV news anchor Jackie Maribe.
During the trial, the prosecution presented 35 witnesses who testified against the accused pair.
