Kevin Kang’ethe, the man suspected of killing his girlfriend in the US and fleeing to Kenya fired his lawyers earlier in the week in the process further delaying his extradition hearings.
Kang’ethe appeared in court twice, on Tuesday and Friday this week, without his lawyers. According to reports, the suspect dropped his lawyers on Monday due to alleged concerns about attorney-client confidentiality.
He claimed that his lawyers had been provided to him through the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). He therefore held reservations that the lawyers might share private discussions with the investigative agency.
Consequently, the court directed Kang’ethe to be allowed access to his phone to obtain contacts to assist in acquiring new legal representation.
However, by Friday, Kang’ethe still had not secured legal counsel. He informed the court that he was denied access to his contacts.
The Superintendent of Prisons in charge of documentation, Martin Onyango, however refuted Kang’ethe’s claims, stating that Kang’ethe had utilized the welfare phone on multiple occasions.
Safaricom data revealed that the suspect made calls on several days between February 16 and February 28 while detained at the Industrial Area Remand and Allocation Centre.
Kang’ethe is accused of having murdered his girlfriend at Boston’s Logan airport parking bay before fleeing to Kenya. He was later on arrested at a nightclub in Westlands.
He would however dramatically escape from Muthaiga police station in unclear circumstances before he was rearrested at Ngong area a few days later.
