The popular Lang’ata road nightclub, 1824, has been demolished two months after it was shut down and later reopened.
1824 was initially closed on December 20, 2023, in the presence of uniformed police officers.
Videos and photos circulating on social media platforms on Friday, March 01st, depicted bulldozers tearing down the iconic entertainment venue, leaving debris scattered across the site where it once stood.
The footage also captured individuals attempting to salvage remnants from the demolition, while others sifted through the wreckage, salvaging valuables.
Crates filled with alcohol were seen lined up outside, with bystanders observing from a distance.
The demolition occurred after the High Court declined to lift orders freezing assets worth Ksh.643.2 million belonging to the owner of 1824, Wilson Nahashon Kanani.
Justice Esther Maina issued the freeze order on September 13, 2023, prohibiting Kanani from disposing of his properties, which include high-end vehicles, houses, land, and Ksh.48 million held in various bank accounts.
This legal action followed a case filed by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), which sought to seize Kanani’s assets, alleging that he was unable to account for their source of income.
According to EACC, Kanani worked as a Development Control Officer II at the Urban Planning Department of the Nairobi County government, earning a monthly gross salary of Ksh.88,530 (net salary of Ksh.55,866).
