The number of deaths resulting from road crashes has risen this year compared to last year. According to data from the National Transport and Safety Authority covering the period from January 1 to March 20, a total of 1,026 lives have been lost due to road crashes.
This signifies a 7 percent increase in fatalities compared to the 956 recorded during the same period in 2023.
Pedestrians accounted for the highest number of fatalities at 384, compared to 323 reported last year.
Motorcyclists followed with 242 deaths, slightly fewer than the 262 recorded in 2023.
In 2024, 225 passengers lost their lives in road crashes, an increase from 170 fatalities in 2023.
The number of driver fatalities decreased to 77 compared to 94 during the same period last year.
Pillion passengers recorded 82 deaths, down from 93 in the previous year.
Only 16 pedal cyclists lost their lives in accidents during the reviewed period in 2024, slightly lower than the 17 recorded in 2023.
