President William Ruto has announced a series of promotions and appointments within the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), signaling significant changes in the military leadership.
Major General Charles Muriu Kahariri has been elevated to the prestigious rank of Lieutenant General and appointed as the new Vice Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, succeeding the retiring Lieutenant General Jonah Maina Mwangi, who served for 42 years.
Additionally, Major General David Kimaiyo Tarus has been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General and appointed as the Kenya Army Commander, taking over from Lieutenant General Peter Mbogo Njiru, who is retiring after 39 years of service.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Defence on Friday, it was announced that Major General Jimson Longiro has also been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General and appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of the National Defence University – Kenya. Previously, Longiro served as the Commander of the Kenya Navy.
Brigadier Thomas Njoroge Ng’ang’a has been promoted to the rank of Major General and appointed as the Commander of the Kenya Navy, having previously served as the Base Commander of the Kenya Navy Base Manda.
President Ruto further approved the promotion and reassignment of seven senior KDF officers based on recommendations from the Kenya Defence Council chaired by CS Aden Duale.
Among the notable appointments, Major General Juma Shee Mwinyikai has been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General and appointed as the Commandant of the National Defence College. Major General Mohammed Nur Hassan will serve as the Deputy Army Commander at the Kenya Army headquarters.
Brigadier Luka Kipkemoi Kutto has been promoted to the rank of Major General and assigned as the General Officer Commanding the Eastern Command. Major General Aphaxard Muthuri Kiugu has been appointed as the Commandant of the Kenya Military Academy.
Major General John Maison Nkoimo will assume the role of General Officer Commanding the Border Security Command, while Brigadier Peter Shikuku Chelimo has been appointed as the Deputy Navy Commander at the Kenya Navy headquarters.
Brigadier Yahya Abdi has been designated as a Senior Directing Staff for the Kenya Navy and posted to the National Defence College. These changes reflect the government’s commitment to ensuring effective leadership and management within the KDF.
