Chief Inspector Andrew Nyabicha, the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at the Archers Post Police station, demonstrated high levels of integrity by rejecting an attempted bribe of Sh80,000 and instead handed over the alleged bribe givers to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
The three suspects arrested included the OCS’s driver, a prison warder, and a relative of a robbery suspect in custody. The trio were arrested for attempting to secure the release of a robbery and human trafficking suspect.
The suspect in question had earlier robbed three Ethiopian female nationals, whom he had smuggled into the country using his vehicle.
According to police reports, the robbery occurred on February 23, 2024, around 5pm, as the suspect diverted to a thicket along the Isiolo-Moyale highway. He then robbed the victims of their belongings, and fled to Nairobi.
Fortunately, a Good Samaritan alerted authorities, leading to the suspect’s arrest on February 25 while en route to Moyale from Nairobi. He was booked at Archers Post Police Station on charges of robbery, forgery, and smuggling.
Police recovered various items, including electronics, fake travel documents, and receipts with both Kenyan and Ethiopian transactions from his vehicle.
EACC revealed that two suspects approached the OCS on February 26, offering a bribe of Sh80,000 in exchange for releasing the suspect and dropping charges.
The OCS promptly reported the bribery attempt to EACC, which led to a joint operation on February 27, resulting in the arrest of the individuals while they were handing over the bribe to the OCS.
