A devastating flash flood in Kamuchiri Village, Mai Mahiu, Nakuru County, has claimed the lives of twenty people as heavy rains wreaked havoc, washing away numerous homes.
The floodwaters surged from a nearby river that breached its banks on Sunday night, flooding the village.
Naivasha police commander Stephen Kirui has verified the tragic incident, confirming that several others have been transferred to Naivasha Hospital for urgent medical attention.
With this latest catastrophe, the death toll from flooding in Kenya has surpassed 100.
In related news, motorists plying the Mai Mahiu-Suswa/Narok highway and the Mai Mahiu – Naivasha road have been advised to look for alternative routes after debris was swept into the roads following Sunday night’s heavy downpour.
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA) issued an alert on Monday, saying motorists should brace for heavy traffic along the said roads as they are impassable at the moment.
KENHA said the heavy rains in the catchment areas of Kinale and Kijabe led water courses to experience an upsurge which then led to the washing away of debris and several houses.
