Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua held talks with the leadership of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party on Tuesday, in preparation for the upcoming grassroots elections. This meeting followed a session led by President William Ruto and Gachagua the previous week, during which the UDA National Steering Committee (NSC) unveiled the roadmap for the party’s grassroots polls.
The discussions aimed to strategize for phased-out elections in select counties starting this month, with subsequent county and national level elections planned for later in the year. Gachagua emphasized that the meeting was focused on consultative and collaborative efforts to strengthen the party and implement the UDA Manifesto effectively.
Posting on his X account, Gachagua shared details of the meeting, which was attended by top UDA officials including party Chairperson Cecily Mbarire, Secretary General Cleophas Malala, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichungw’ah, Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot, Vice-Chairperson Hassan Omar, Treasurer Japheth Nyakundi, among others.
Last week, the UDA NSC outlined a phased approach to its elections and appointed a new national elections board to oversee the process. The first phase of UDA’s grassroots elections is scheduled for April 26, 2024, across seven counties including Nairobi, Narok, West-Pokot, Busia, Homabay, Isiolo, and Garissa. The second phase is set for June 22, 2024, covering 13 counties such as Mombasa, Uasin Gishu, Nyandarua, Tharaka Nithi, Machakos, Kisii, Bungoma, Siaya, Taita Taveta, Wajir, Tana River, Kwale, and Marsabit.
