The government has decided to delay the reopening of schools until Monday, May 6, 2024, due to concerns over the impact of ongoing floods.
According to Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu, some schools have suffered significant damage from the floods, posing a threat to the safety of students and staff.
“The devastating effects of the rains in some of the schools are so severe that it will be imprudent to risk the lives of learners and staff before water-tight measures are put in place to ensure adequate safety of all affected school communities,” Machogu stated.
As a result of this assessment, the Ministry of Education has opted to push back the reopening date for all primary and secondary schools by one week.
Originally slated for April 29 (Today), the reopening will now occur on May 6, 2024.
Machogu assured that the Ministry will collaborate with relevant agencies and stakeholders to implement measures to address the challenges posed by the rains. Additionally, regular updates regarding the education sector will be provided.
The decision to delay reopening follows a proposal by the National Parents Association to adjust opening dates for schools in flood-affected areas.
This action coincides with warnings from the Meteorological Department of anticipated heavier rainfall in the upcoming days. The current toll from the rains stands at over 90 fatalities, with numerous others injured or missing.
