Kenya Railways announced on Wednesday the temporary suspension of all commuter train services due to heavy rains experienced across the country.
In a notice, the corporation stated that floods had affected the rail lines, making it difficult for trains to operate.
“We wish to notify members of the public that commuter train services have been temporarily suspended due to the ongoing heavy rains that have affected the rail lines,” read part of the notice.
“We are compelled to take these precautionary measures because the safety of our customers is always of paramount importance to us.”
“We will advise you once normal services resume. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused.”
This directive comes as Kenyans expressed concerns about the drainage situation across the country, which has led to travel disruptions and left several people homeless.
In addition to the suspension of train services, highways including Mombasa Road and Thika Road have been flooded, causing traffic jams during peak morning hours.
Kenyans have urged the government to implement measures to mitigate the flooding situation. However, some have questioned the proactive measures taken by county governments, especially since they were warned about the incoming floods by the Kenya Meteorological Department.
