Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has declared Wednesday, April 10, 2024, as a public holiday in Kenya to commemorate Idd-ul-Fitr. The announcement was made through a gazette notice issued on Tuesday, April 9th.
“IT IS notified for the general information of the public that, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 2 (1) of the Public Holidays Act. The Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration declares that Wednesday, the 10th April, 2024, shall be a Public Holiday to mark Idd-ul-Fitr,” stated the notice.
Idd-ul-Fitr, also known as the Festival of Breaking the Fast, is a significant occasion for Muslims worldwide. It represents a time of joy, reflection, and gratitude, signifying the culmination of a month dedicated to spiritual growth and fasting.
Traditionally, Idd-ul-Fitr begins with the sighting of the new moon, followed by a special congregational prayer known as Salat al-Eid. After the prayer, Muslims exchange greetings of “Eid Mubarak” (Blessed Eid) and celebrate by sharing food and gifts with family and friends.
