Residents of Karia-ini village in Lari Subcounty have defied government calls to evacuate their flooded homes.
Despite government warnings, residents insist that the floodwaters in their village are receding slowly.
Simon Mwangi, a resident, expressed hope that the water will eventually drain away completely. However, he highlighted their concern that the flooded toilets pose a risk of disease outbreak.
“Our latrines are all filled with water. When one uses them, the waste floats and mixes with the flowing water,” Mwangi explained.
Consequently, officials from the Kiambu County government and a multi-agency rescue team visited the village. The team, led by Water and Environment Executive David Kuria and Lari Kirenga MCA Josphat Kinyanjui, advised the residents to relocate to safer areas to avoid waterborne diseases.
Despite the advice, the residents chose to remain in their homes.
