Authorities conducted a crackdown on illegal structures below the Nairobi Expressway in the Westlands region on the morning of Thursday, April 18, resulting in the demolition of these establishments.
A video footage circulating online showed the structures engulfed in flames as police officers took action to dismantle the unauthorized constructions along the road. The operation led to heavy traffic congestion along the affected stretch.
These structures often served as makeshift homes for homeless individuals and street children, who relied on the shelter below the Expressway for temporary refuge. However, their presence raised concerns among motorists, particularly regarding security issues, especially during the night.
The government’s strict approach towards reclaiming public land, which has been either grabbed or encroached upon for various purposes, prompted the crackdown on these illegal establishments.
