The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) is projecting heavy rains exceeding 40mm across the country this weekend with the weather impacting forty-three counties including those in the northern sector.

In an advisory issued on Saturday, the agency said the Lake Basin Region, Rift Valley, the Highland West and East of Rift Valley including Nairobi, Southeastern lowlands, the coast, and the northern sector will all register heavy rainfall throughout the weekend.

”The heavy rainfall (of more than 40mm in 24hrs) is predicted over Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley including Nairobi area, Southeastern Lowlands and South coast on 14th April, 2024,” KMD Director David Gikungu stated.

The Meteorological Agency further forecast increased intensity in rainfall at the coast from Monday to Thursday exceeding 50mm.

“It is likely to intensify from 15th to 18th April 2024 to more than 50mm in 24hrs along the coast,” KMD advised warning of gusty winds and large ocean waves in the region.

The advisory comes as heavy rainfall continues to cause havoc in parts of the country, forcing highway closures in the north amid flash floods.

The Kenya Red Cross has also reported displacement of persons in several sub-urban areas in the Capital Nairobi where households in Kibra, Viwandani, Kware, Mukuru kwa Njenga and Mukuru kwa Reuben have been impacted.

“We are actively assessing the situation on the ground to determine the number of households affected,” Red Cross said on Saturday.
