All 34 residents of the collapsed building in Nairobi’s Mountain View Ward, Uthiru area, have been located and are safe, as confirmed by the Nairobi County government.
Bramwel Simiyu, Nairobi’s Disaster Management Chief Officer, stated that no casualties have been reported from the incident, reassuring the public that all concerns regarding the four missing residents, including a 10-year-old girl, have been cleared.
“The building was sinking slowly, and all the residents were able to evacuate safely,” Simiyu said.
However, Simiyu mentioned that the county government’s emergency team will continue to search the area while awaiting assistance from the Kenya Defence Forces based in Kahawa Barracks, who will deploy their sniffer dogs to ensure no one is trapped in the debris.
Simiyu noted that one house with a gas flame was allowed to burn out safely.
“The Nairobi City County Government is providing immediate humanitarian aid for the night and is planning to offer further support and facilitate reintegration,” he added.
The Kenya Red Cross (KRC) has also confirmed that all tenants have been accounted for, with only one female sustaining injuries.
“One female, rescued at the beginning of the incident, was taken to the hospital by well-wishers,” stated KRC on Wednesday morning.
“Ten others received treatment at the scene by the Red Cross Action team. As of now, all tenants have been located.”
