Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has initiated efforts to reconcile with former President Uhuru Kenyatta, aiming to unify the Mt. Kenya region. Gachagua expressed his desire to put aside past political differences and foster regional unity.
Speaking in his native Agikuyu language, Gachagua emphasized the importance of including Uhuru Kenyatta in the efforts to unify Mt. Kenya. “We said all people; those who were in UDA, Jubilee, Azimio, if we are talking like me, let’s forgive one another and unite. Even Uhuru Kenyatta is our child, let him come, we walk together. Is that okay?” Gachagua stated.
The deputy president, who has had a tumultuous relationship with Kenyatta, explained that his peace offering aims to reduce political tensions in Central Kenya and strengthen community cohesion for the region’s benefit.
“Do you have a problem with Uhuru Kenyatta? Isn’t the election over like a game of football? If we do not love one another or if we are not in agreement, we could encounter problems,” Gachagua added.
Gachagua’s conciliatory comments follow the Limuru III meeting, where it was announced that Uhuru Kenyatta would serve as the Mt. Kenya spokesperson and lead the newly formed Haki coalition. The meeting also criticized the deputy president for allegedly neglecting the concerns of Mt. Kenya residents during his two years in office.
“We resolve that Uhuru Kenyatta is our spokesman,” declared former Laikipia Governor Nderitu Muriithi.
Gachagua’s public outreach to the former president came shortly after he addressed a church gathering in Kirinyaga, explaining his recent absence from public life. “I was deep in the heart of Mt. Kenya, praying, fasting, and meditating,” he said, reflecting on the country’s state.
This reconciliation effort occurs amid rumors of a strained relationship between Gachagua and President William Ruto. Gachagua has been a vocal advocate for the “one man, one shilling, one vote” revenue-sharing formula, a stance that has received both praise and criticism.
Through these efforts, Gachagua hopes to bridge divides and foster a spirit of unity and cooperation within the Mt. Kenya region.
