The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) has announced that the inflation rate for April decreased to five per cent from 5.7 per cent in March.

In its latest release, KNBS attributed the drop in the inflation rate to reductions in the prices of various commodities, including fuel and food.

“The overall inflation rate as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 5.0 per cent in April 2024,” stated KNBS Director-General Macdonald Obudho.

The prices of essential food items experienced notable decreases. For instance, a fortified 2 kg packet of maize flour dropped by three per cent this month, while a 2 kg packet of sifted maize flour saw a decrease of 2.3 per cent.

Similarly, the price of a 2 kg packet of wheat flour decreased by 2.5 per cent. Additionally, the prices of a 1 kg packet of sugar and a litre of cooking oil dropped by 8.3 per cent and 1.2 per cent respectively.

However the prices of vegetables like onions, tomatoes and oranges all went up in April.

Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuel index increased by 1.3% between March and April 2024.

The inflation rate is however still high compared to the same period in 2023.
