Sonko blames cartels and ‘deep state’ for impeachment

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has attributed his impeachment to powerful cartels and elements within the government, alleging a concerted effort to remove him from office.

Sonko, speaking on Obina TV, revealed that his clashes with what he referred to as the “deep state” were a result of his refusal to condone illegal demolitions in slum areas without compensating affected residents. He accused former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and PS Karanja Kibicho of being instrumental in his downfall.

According to Sonko, his efforts to combat corruption and dismantle entrenched networks within the county led to his removal. Upon assuming office in 2017, he inherited a partially digitized cash collection system, which he revamped to prevent embezzlement by cartels.

Sonko asserted that his impeachment was a retaliatory move orchestrated by those he had crossed by disrupting their illicit revenue streams. Despite facing legal battles stemming from his impeachment, he remains hopeful for exoneration.

Throughout his tenure, Sonko claimed significant achievements, including the construction of infrastructure such as Dandora Stadium, fire stations, and modern markets. He criticized the failure to officially commission projects during his tenure, viewing it as a deliberate attempt to tarnish his legacy.

Sonko expressed confidence in the legal process and anticipated a favorable resolution to the pending cases, maintaining his stance against corruption and asserting his commitment to serving the people of Nairobi.
