Netflix, one of the world’s leading video streaming platforms, has announced that it will soon begin offering content in HDR10+, bringing an upgraded viewing experience to select devices.
HDR10+ Support Expands to Samsung TVs, Phones, and More
In its latest update, Netflix confirmed that it has started streaming select titles in HDR10+. However, this feature will only be available on devices that support the AV1 codec and have HDR10+ certification. While the initial rollout includes a limited number of titles, Netflix plans to expand HDR10+ availability across more content in the future.
Previously, Netflix supported HDR streaming in HDR10 and Dolby Vision. Now, the company aims to ensure that all HDR content on its platform is accessible in HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision formats, offering viewers greater flexibility based on their device capabilities.
Netflix first adopted the AV1 codec to deliver high-quality video streaming on mobile devices while reducing data consumption. This efficient compression technology has since become an industry standard for 4K HDR streaming.
With this update, eligible Samsung devices—including smart TVs, laptops, smart monitors, phones, and tablets—should soon be able to stream HDR10+ content on Netflix. Notably, all Samsung smart TVs released from 2020 onward support AV1 and HDR10+, making them compatible with this new streaming enhancement.
What is HDR10+?
HDR10+ is an advanced high dynamic range (HDR) format that enhances color depth, contrast, and overall picture realism. Similar to Dolby Vision, it uses dynamic metadata to adjust brightness and contrast on a frame-by-frame basis, optimizing the visual experience.
A key advantage of HDR10+ is that it is an open and royalty-free format, whereas Dolby Vision requires manufacturers to pay licensing fees to Dolby. Over the past few years, support for HDR10+ has steadily grown, with major platforms such as Apple TV+ and iTunes adopting it. Recently, Disney+ also announced HDR10+ support, further cementing its presence in the streaming industry.
With Netflix now embracing HDR10+, more viewers will soon be able to enjoy stunning visuals without the constraints of proprietary formats.
