Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has joined forces with key opposition leaders, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, in a strategic meeting aimed at shaping the 2027 general election campaign. The high-stakes meeting, held on April 29 in Nairobi, marked Matiang’i’s first public alignment with Gachagua’s camp, ending months of speculation about his political allegiance.

The meeting is part of a broader opposition effort to build a formidable national movement early enough to challenge President William Ruto in the next election cycle. Other prominent leaders in attendance included Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua (NARC Kenya/PLP), Eugene Wamalwa (DAP-K), Mukhisa Kituyi, and former Cabinet Secretaries Mithika Linturi and Justin Muturi.

Although Matiang’i has recently returned to Kenya from the United States, it had remained unclear whether he would publicly rejoin the political scene. His presence at this meeting now signals a potential comeback, although he is yet to officially comment on the speculation surrounding his presidential ambitions.

Insiders reveal that Matiang’i has spent the past week in private talks with regional and national power brokers, suggesting a calculated re-entry into the political arena.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Gachagua emphasized the need for unity within the opposition to mount a serious challenge in 2027.

“We will be meeting on Tuesday, and from that meeting, you are going to see a united team ready to liberate this country,” Gachagua stated during an April 27 interview with Weru TV.

He also dismissed fears of infighting within the opposition, assuring that a fair, data-driven approach would be used to select the coalition’s presidential candidate.

“The opposition will rely on scientific methods to select the most suitable candidate to face Ruto,” Gachagua added.

Matiang’i’s appearance alongside opposition heavyweights may signal the beginning of a powerful coalition, with political observers closely watching how roles and ambitions will be negotiated in the run-up to 2027.
