Former Chief Justice David Maraga has officially declared his candidacy for President in the 2027 general election, marking a dramatic entry into the country’s political arena from the judiciary.
In a brief statement issued on Wednesday, June 18, Maraga said the decision followed intense personal reflection and consultations with close allies.
“After discussion with friends and after serious reflection, I thought it was time we thought about the leadership of this country. We cannot let some people take our country to doomsday—literally,” Maraga said.
“As a result of that reflection, I have made up my mind that I will run for the presidency of this country in 2027.”
Known for his unwavering stance on the rule of law during his time at the helm of the Judiciary—including his historic nullification of the 2017 presidential election—Maraga now turns his focus to elective politics, positioning himself as a clean, principled alternative in what is expected to be a hotly contested race.
In a statement that drew widespread reaction online, Maraga declared:
“I am the Gen Z Presidential candidate. I have children, and many people have children.”
Maraga becomes one of the first high-profile candidates to announce a presidential run for 2027, setting the stage for a potentially transformative political campaign. His entry is likely to shake up alliances and challenge the country’s political status quo.
