Kenyan activist and lawyer Morara Kebaso has revealed that he will be abandoning a donated Toyota Land Cruiser TX in favour of a more affordable diesel-powered vehicle, citing the high cost of fuel as a major barrier to sustaining his civic engagement work.
Responding to a follower’s inquiry on X (formerly Twitter) about the status of “gari yetu” (our car), Kebaso stated:
“We are changing to a diesel one, which is affordable to fuel without much fundraising.”
The activist widely known for exposing stalled and incomplete government projects associated with President William Ruto’s administration, said the Land Cruiser—originally donated to aid his nationwide fact-finding missions—had become a financial strain.
In an August 2024 interview on Citizen TV’s JKLive, Kebaso disclosed that he relies entirely on public contributions through M-Pesa to fuel the vehicle and cover travel expenses during his tours. With rising fuel prices and limited resources, maintaining the fuel-hungry TX Land Cruiser has proven unsustainable.
