Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino was ejected from the National Assembly chambers on Tuesday, July 2, 2025, after appearing in the House wearing an advocate’s collar—a fashion statement that sparked swift disapproval from fellow lawmakers and the Speaker.
The incident unfolded after Mathare MP Anthony Oluoch raised concern about Babu’s attire, seeking guidance on whether it was appropriate under Parliament’s Standing Orders and dress code protocols.
“Indeed, Honourable Babu Owino, you are improperly dressed,” ruled the Speaker. “I order you to retreat from the House, dress up, and come back.”
The National Assembly’s official dress code prohibits members from wearing attire that is not deemed formal or traditionally parliamentary. The advocate’s collar, typically reserved for courtrooms, was therefore seen as a breach of decorum.
Babu Owino, whose real name is Paul Ongili, did not respond during the brief exchange and quietly exited the chambers as directed. The Embakasi East MP, known for his flamboyant style and vocal stances, was among 609 new lawyers admitted to the Bar by Chief Justice Martha Koome on May 23, 2025.
At the time, Babu described the occasion as the start of a “historic chapter” in his life, celebrating his legal milestone on social media and pledging to use his legal skills to fight for justice.
“I will use my voice as a lawyer and legislator to protect the rights of the oppressed,” he posted shortly after his admission.
