In a landmark move, the Nyamira County Assembly has ejected 10 Members of County Assembly (MCAs) for missing eight consecutive sittings, citing violation of attendance rules under the Powers and Privileges Act, 2017.
The decision, announced during a special sitting on Monday, marks the largest single-day removal of MCAs in Kenya’s devolved governance history since the 2013 inception of county governments.
Among those shown the door are elected MCAs Nyambega Gisesa (Rigoma) and Joel Ombongi (Bokeira)—both elected on a United Progressive Alliance (UPA) ticket. The remaining eight MCAs were nominated, representing parties including ANC, ODM, Wiper, and UPA.
Affected Nominated MCAs:
- Martha Marua (ANC)
- Janerose Nafula Nyakundi (ODM)
- Jeriah Nyakangi (UPA)
- Zipporah Matundura (Wiper)
- Elijah Abere (UPA)
- Edina Obara (UPA)
- Beatrice Onyancha (UPA)
The decision followed the adoption of a report tabled by the Powers and Privileges Committee, chaired by Bonyamatuta MCA Julius Matwere. The committee found the MCAs in breach of the Act by failing to attend eight gazetted assembly sessions without valid reason.
In his ruling, Speaker Thaddeus Nyabaro confirmed that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) would be notified to declare the seats vacant, paving the way for fresh nominations or by-elections.
“The law is clear. Missing eight consecutive sittings without permission is a violation that attracts expulsion,” Speaker Nyabaro said.
