Nairobi, Kenya – Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba has been suspended from the National Assembly for 20 sitting days after dramatically walking out of the chamber in protest during a ministerial statement on the Kware dumpsite killings.
The ruling was delivered by Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, who said Wamuchomba’s actions amounted to “contempt in the face of the court, not just contempt of court”, citing Standing Order 107(a), read together with (i)(a) and (iii).
“During the suspension, she will not be allowed to enter the precincts of Parliament or enjoy its facilities, including restaurants, gym, and office,” Wetang’ula stated.
The Protest
The standoff began when Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen responded to Wamuchomba’s questions regarding the recovery of multiple female bodies from the Embakasi quarry dumpsite. Dissatisfied with the response, Wamuchomba staged a walkout, prompting the Speaker to drop her question entirely.
When ordered to return to the chamber, she refused, leading to the immediate suspension.
Wetang’ula criticised the MP, saying:
“Members, those kinds of bravado and playing to the gallery do not help at all.”
