Kericho, Kenya – Friday, August 14, 2025 – Kericho Governor Erick Mutai has been officially impeached after 33 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) voted in favour of his removal in a tense and dramatic session at the County Assembly chambers.
MCAs Secure Two-Thirds Majority in Impeachment Vote
During the special sitting, convened exclusively to discuss the motion, heated debates erupted before the decisive vote was cast. Out of the 47 MCAs, 33 voted in favour of impeachment, while 14 opposed the motion, comfortably surpassing the two-thirds majority threshold required by law to oust a sitting governor.
The impeachment motion levelled serious accusations against Governor Mutai, including:
- Gross violation of the Constitution
- Abuse of office
- Mismanagement of county resources
In a previous impeachment attempt, 31 MCAs had voted for his removal, but the Senate later dismissed the charges, allowing him to remain in office.
Speaker Confirms Impeachment, Senate to Decide Fate
Announcing the results, the County Assembly Speaker confirmed that the case will now be forwarded to the Senate of Kenya, where Governor Mutai will have an opportunity to defend himself against the allegations.
Governor Mutai, who attended the session flanked by his legal team led by prominent lawyer Katwa Kigen, remained composed as the outcome was read. Voting was conducted electronically to ensure accuracy and transparency.
If the Senate upholds the County Assembly’s decision, Kericho will head into a political shake-up, with the deputy governor set to assume office as stipulated in the Constitution of Kenya.
