Construction workers and engineers are racing against time to complete the final touches on the grave of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga at his Opoda Farm in Bondo, Siaya County, as preparations for his Sunday, October 19 burial enter the home stretch.
Grave Construction Nears Completion
The construction work, which began on Thursday, October 16, marks a critical stage in the week-long farewell events for Kenya’s veteran opposition leader.
On Saturday, the National Construction Authority (NCA) Chief Executive Officer Maurice Aketch visited the site to inspect the progress and ensure the structure complies with national safety and engineering standards.
After the inspection, Aketch expressed satisfaction with the quality of the work and commended the construction team for working tirelessly to meet the tight deadline.
“The team has been working overnight to ensure everything is ready for tomorrow. We have lifted the walling and are now applying the final finishes on the floor and walls,” said Aketch.
High Safety and Structural Standards
According to the NCA boss, excavation and walling have been completed, while the team is currently working on plastering, tiling, and installing the canopy that will shade Raila’s final resting place.
Aketch said the grave structure is being built in stages to ensure proper setting and long-term stability.
“The materials used have been carefully selected to provide adequate structural support and durability for the canopy,” he added.
Raila’s Final Resting Place
The late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga will be laid to rest beside his father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi, a historic site that serves as the Odinga family mausoleum and political heritage landmark.
The Sunday burial is expected to draw thousands of mourners, including world leaders, diplomats, and Kenyan dignitaries, paying their final respects to a man who defined the nation’s democratic journey.
