Winnie Odinga, daughter of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, moved mourners to tears during her father’s State Funeral at Nyayo National Stadium, describing his final moments as a reflection of his lifelong resilience, discipline, and dignity.
Speaking before thousands of mourners and global dignitaries, Winnie gave a heartfelt account of her father’s last days in India, emphasizing that he remained strong until his final breath.
“He Died in My Arms — Strong and Proud”
“I was with him in India when he took his last breath. He died in my arms,” Winnie said, her voice breaking with emotion. “He did not die as people have been saying on social media. Every day he was waking up and walking one round, then two rounds the next day. That morning, he pushed to five rounds. He died strong and with dignity and pride — and you must be proud of that.”
She urged Kenyans to draw inspiration from her father’s strength and resilience, adding, “You all must also walk with your heads held high, and walk strong and proud that he left as a gentleman.”
A Father, Mentor, and Patriot
Winnie described the former Prime Minister not only as a towering political icon but also as a devoted father and mentor who taught his family humility, courage, and service to others.
“To the world, he was a revolutionary. To us, he was a father who reminded us to stand tall even when things got tough,” she said.
Her tribute echoed the sentiments shared by millions of Kenyans who have mourned Raila as a symbol of national unity, democracy, and endurance.
A Legacy of Strength and Sacrifice
Raila Odinga passed away on October 15, 2025, while undergoing treatment in India at the age of 80. His passing marked the end of an era for one of Kenya’s most influential political figures — a man whose name became synonymous with reform, opposition resilience, and the struggle for justice.
He will be laid to rest on Sunday, October 19, at his Bondo home in Siaya County, in a ceremony expected to draw both local and international leaders.
