Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has once again found himself at the centre of public controversy after dramatically storming his daughter’s home in Nairobi following claims that she had been assaulted by her husband.
A viral video circulating on social media shows Sonko entering the residence late at night, accompanied by his bodyguards, after he reportedly received a distress call from his daughter, Salma Mbuvi.
Inside the house, a visibly enraged Sonko confronts his son-in-law, demanding to know why he had allegedly attacked Salma.
“Unanipigia mtoto kwa nini? Hii kifua yote unapiga mtoto mdogo hivi kwa nini?” Sonko is heard shouting as tensions rise.
The confrontation intensified when one of Sonko’s bodyguards slapped the son-in-law during the heated moment. Sonko quickly intervened, ordering his security to stand down and insisting the situation should not escalate further.
Salma Defends Her Husband Amid Confrontation
In a surprising twist, Salma is heard pleading with her father to stop the altercation.
“Usipige bwana yangu!” she says, attempting to shield her husband despite the accusations.
Sonko, however, reminded his son-in-law of the support he had provided over the years—including purchasing a Range Rover Vogue, covering rent, school fees, and other family expenses—accusing him of repaying that generosity with violence.
He then instructed Salma to pack her belongings, stating that his security team had been ready to “respond forcefully” had he not intervened personally.
Sonko Speaks Out on Domestic Violence
Following the incident, the former governor issued a public statement addressing the broader issue of domestic violence in Kenya, using his daughter’s case as an example of how widespread the problem remains.
“If my own daughter can be harassed in her own house, what about the countless young women and men who suffer silently?” Sonko wrote.
“If children from well-off families are being beaten, what about the daughters of the poor?”
He urged couples in abusive relationships to speak up rather than suffer in silence, emphasizing that seeking help is not a sign of weakness.
Massive Online Debate Erupts
Many Kenyans praised him for defending his daughter, while others questioned the involvement of his bodyguards and the broadcasting of private family matters.
