Technicians from the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) have begun reinstalling power transformers in Mbeere North following complaints from residents who alleged that the units had been removed months after the November 2025 by-election.
Residents had claimed the transformers were installed ahead of the by-election to facilitate electricity connections but were removed about eight months later before many households could be connected to the national grid.
The allegations sparked political criticism, with some residents claiming the installations had been used to influence voters during the election period.
However, KPLC dismissed the claims, maintaining that the transformers were removed solely for maintenance and repair.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the utility company said about 15 transformers in Mbeere North had been taken to specialised workshops after developing technical faults.
“Transformers in Mbeere North were removed strictly for maintenance and repairs, just as is routinely done in other parts of the country. Whenever transformers develop technical faults such as water ingress or other defects that cannot be rectified on site, they are taken to specialized workshops for repairs, testing and controlled heat drying to eliminate moisture and restore their integrity,” KPLC said.
On Thursday night, KPLC technicians were seen reinstalling a transformer in the Njarange area.
The company explained that the transformer was replacing another unit that had been vandalised last Sunday.
“The replacement is part of ongoing efforts to restore and strengthen electricity supply in the area,” KPLC said.
