Police in Meru County have launched investigations into the killing of a 26-year-old man in Igembe South Sub-County.
According to police, the incident occurred on Thursday evening in Antuambui Sub-location.
The deceased was identified as Phinius Mutuma.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Mutuma was allegedly chased by a group of young men who were known to his relatives.
Police said the group reportedly caught up with him, dragged him to a nearby river, assaulted him and inflicted multiple cuts using a sharp object.
Mutuma sustained severe injuries to the head, hands and legs before he was left unconscious at the scene, investigators said.
Residents later rescued him and rushed him to Nyambene Level IV Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police officers, accompanied by crime scene investigators, visited and documented the scene as part of the ongoing investigation.
Detectives are working to establish the motive behind the killing and identify all those involved.
