Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – The Tanzanian government has announced the cancellation of public celebrations for Independence Day, originally slated for December 9, 2025.
Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba revealed on Monday evening that President Samia Suluhu Hassan directed the funds intended for the festivities to be redirected towards addressing the recent economic challenges facing the country.
“The president has directed that on December 9, there will be no celebrations for Independence,” said Nchemba.
“The responsible sectors, including the implementing agencies and the coordinator, must ensure that all the funds are properly allocated. The President has reiterated that all damaged infrastructure must be repaired.”
Focus on Economic Recovery
The move comes amid a three-week economic slump in Tanzania, with the government prioritizing the repair of damaged infrastructure and the stabilization of key sectors.
Context: Post-Election Unrest
The decision also follows unrest after the October 29 General Election, which was marred by internet and electricity blackouts. President Samia was declared the winner amid tensions that reportedly resulted in several casualties.
By reallocating Independence Day funds to economic recovery and infrastructure repair, the Tanzanian government aims to restore stability and address pressing economic issues while ensuring resources are used effectively for national development.
