A 32-year-old man has died after consuming excessive alcohol during a village celebration in Kuresoi, Nakuru County.

A second man was rushed to hospital in critical condition after the two were found lying unconscious by the roadside in Olubumbu village, where residents had gathered on Friday to celebrate the rite of passage for a group of boys.

Police said the pair had consumed excessive amounts of alcohol during the festivities. One of the victims, Sammy Karenjo, was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. His body has since been moved to the mortuary for a post-mortem.

The incident comes as authorities intensify a nationwide crackdown on illicit brews, leading to the destruction of thousands of litres of outlawed alcohol and the arrest of dozens of suspected brewers.

Police have launched investigations to establish the source of the alcohol consumed by the victims and whether it was illicitly produced.
